Rain at the fair welcomed

Oxford farmer Ken Turpin was happy to be wearing his coat at the Sheffield Ewe Fair earlier this month.

Mr Turpin is a regular visitor to the weekly livestock sale at Coalgate and the annual Sheffield fair, which was split between the Coalgate and Sheffield saleyards for the first time.

The rain would give some respite to dry stock farmers around the region, he said.

"It’s pretty dry at the moment but this drizzle might change the mood a wee bit.

"We are coming off a high in the market around Christmas time and while it’s dry, it’s a pretty typical Canterbury summer and this rain keeps it ticking along."

Mr Turpin used to breed Romney ewes, but has moved to a lifestyle block in recent years.
