A family-friendly 4WD event in the Mid Canterbury foothills is all set to roll this Saturday.

The impressive back country safari is a fundraiser for the Mt Somers Walkway Society, which maintains a network of popular walking tracks in the foothills, and will also use funds raised to assess the feasibility of re-establishing a track to the scenic Sharplin Falls waterfall.

Safari spokesman David Howden said society members had cleared rocks from river crossings and trimmed matagouri on Monday, ahead of the 4WD safari.

There was growth in the vegetation despite the dry conditions, and there was strictly no smoking on the day. The safari is being co-ordinated by the Ashburton 4WD Club and is open to vehicles with a high clearance only.

The event is being run with the co-operation of the Department of Conservation, Castleridge Station and Lake Heron Station. Entry is $80 per vehicle and the safari is limited to 80 vehicles.

Vehicles need to meet at the Stour River Bridge on the Ashburton Gorge Road at 8am to register, with the convoy moving off at 9.30am.

Contact Robert Schikker (021 186 6107) to pre-register.
