The Selwyn/North Canterbury Festival of Hockey provided a learning experience for young players, coaches, umpires and volunteers last Saturday.

The festival was held at Rangiora's MainPower Hockey Turf between hockey teams from Selwyn (Waikirikiri, Malvern and Hornby clubs mostly) and North Canterbury (the Rangiora, Hinemoa-Kaiapoi and Hurunui clubs).

Its aim is to develop all aspects of hockey across the region and provide a fun season finale for junior players.

''This year we had two Year 6/7 girls teams, two Year 6/7 boys teams and two Year 8/9/10 mixed teams - six teams in total from North Canterbury and five from Selwyn as they only had one boys 6/7 team,'' says North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust marketing manager Tony Kean.

Each team played twice against their regional opponents with the exception of one Year 6/7 boys game. Games were 20 minutes each half and teams had a gap between games for their coaches to review their first games and discuss things they could improve for their next.

Although scores were recorded, the emphasis was on learning not finding an over-all winner.

''I think, in the end, game results were pretty much even between the two regions,'' Tony says.

Teams were chosen at random, with no skill-based selection, in order to get a range of skills and experience playing together.

The all-weather turf held up well for the tournament, which was held in cold and overcast conditions, with persistent rain throughout the day preventing the need to water the pitch.
