Oxford Area School dux Ellie Tizzard is congratulated by principal Mike Hart.
Ellie Tizzard has been named dux at Oxford Area School for 2019.

Runner-up was Rebecca Jones, who also won sportsperson of the year for the fifth successive year.

Ellie received awards in four subjects out of five and has been involved in both sporting and cultural activities, including swimming, netball, basketball, the student council and house leadership.

She was this year's Waimakariri Youth MP and won the 2019 New Zealand Area Schools excellence award for the Canterbury region.

Rebecca also received awards in four subjects out of five, managing a rigorous workload while competing at both a national and international level in archery.

Sportsperson of the year runner-up was awarded to Year 11 pupil Ashley Riley, who was selected for the Top Of the South Island teams for both basketball and netball at the New Zealand Area Schools tournament, where she made the national team in basketball.

Ashley was a member of the school's senior netball team in the South Island Secondary Schools tournament during September and has also given service as a coach of a junior basketball team, as well as refereeing and being a floor controller.
