Residents will be able to borrow pest traps and take them home thanks to a new Lincoln Envirotown Trust project launching on October 26.

Envirotown trustee Sam Rowland, who manages the project, said the group is very excited to be getting it off the ground.

"We are set to launch the trap library at the Lincoln Farmers and Craft Market. We were recently able to secure some funding from the Lincoln Community Committee to make the traps so we're just busy trying to get all the information ready and preparing for the launch," she said.

The project will operate similarly to a book library, Ms Rowland said.

"There'll be people stationed there providing backyard trapping advice. You can borrow a DOC 200 trap that trap rats, stoats and hedgehogs, and a month later bring it back. We'll ask for some information of what you've caught so we can keep a record of it."

Bait will also be provided, depending on the pest you want to catch.

The idea came about as the next logical step in helping to improve biodiversity in the district, she said.

"Lincoln Envirotown does a lot of planting around the district and public education, so for us it's just the logical next step to begin a trapping project that means the general public can do this themselves with no barriers."

The trap library will operate on the last Saturday every month during the same hours as the Lincoln Farmers and Craft Market.
