A project to turn a pit in Springfield into recreation space is taking shape.

The Springfield Township Committee plans to create an area at the corner of Tramway Rd and Tawera Lane to bring the community together.

Committee member Emma Stead said the tidying up of the pit is complete and native planting is set to start next month.

“The project is going well so far. The district council has helped with clearing the site because we found out it would take a lot longer than expected to do it as a community ourselves,” she said.

Last weekend the committee marked the proposed walking track around the perimeter of the pit.

“The project is on track and the planting of 1450 native plants is set to start in mid to late November,” she said.

“We will have a big planting day and that’s with plants that have been supplied by Southern Woods nursery.”

The final concept plans for the project were approved by the committee at a meeting last month.

They include a bike trail, a walking track and a fitness station as well as family-friendly barbecue areas.

The plans also include native plantings and a nature play area for children.
