Tributes flow for young couple found dead in Victoria

A young woman found dead alongside her boyfriend in a four-wheel drive crash in regional Victoria is being remembered as an "outgoing" character by her footy clubmates.

The bodies of Shannon Lowden, 21, and Caleb Forbes, 22, were found on Friday, after the pair set off a week ago on a camping trip to Thomson Dam in West Gippsland.

Police are yet to reveal how the couple died but footage from the scene shows a badly-damaged Nissan Patrol on its side against a tree at the base of a steep incline.

Ms Lowden would be "dearly missed", Croydon North-MLOC Football Club president Graham Hewitt told AAP.

"She loved the outdoors. She is just an outgoing, lovely 21-year-old girl. She did not miss a social night, she loved having a giggle," he said.

"She is loving, caring, friendly. We are a new women's footy club and all the girls are aching. The 32 girls just love sport and love each other as a family."

A widespread land and air search ended when the couple was found dead at about 11am on Friday in their green 1994 Nissan Patrol wagon near Trig East track.

"I am not in a position to tell you what happened right now," Inspector Shane Cashman told reporters.

"It's a very difficult track to negotiate.

"It's almost a sheer drop to the side and we'll put some work into finding out the causation as to what's actually occurred to make that car leave the road."

Insp Cashman said the couple's families were devastated, and it was a tough result for searchers.

A search commenced on Monday after Mr Forbes failed to attend work a day earlier.

At least two of Ms Lowden's footy mates helped scour bushland for the pair.
