An estimated 29 jobs are set to go at Wanaka's Dunmore St New World supermarket.

Foodstuffs New Zealand media spokeswoman Emma Wooster confirmed the proposed job cuts to the Otago Daily Times.

Wanaka App are reporting the owners, Justin and Jocelyn Purcell, are currently going through a process to reduce the number of jobs at the store from 134 to 105.

Foodstuffs South Island retail general manager Tim Donaldson told the Wanaka App "full time staff hours, which have traditionally been at 42 ½ hours per week, are proposed to be 40 hours per week, which has the positive benefit of allowing the store to keep an additional six staff members employed."

He said due to the reduction in customers at New World Wanaka as a results of the Covid-19 crisis,  the store predicted a significant reduction in turnover for the foreseeable future.

This meant the owners were left with no option but to reassess staff numbers and the other costs associated with running the store, Mr Donaldson said.
