Erratic driver prevented from escaping crash scene

A Queenstown  man who crashed into a light pole on Frankton Rd was stopped from leaving the scene by another motorist.

Dave Darren Felix (24), unemployed, of Lake Hayes Estate, was seen driving erratically heading east on the busy arterial route about 2.45am on July 18.

A member of the public observed him weaving across the centreline, and into the bicycle lane on the left-hand side of the road. He was also accelerating and braking ‘‘dramatically’’, Prosecuting Sergeant Tim Hamilton said.

Felix spun after hitting ice on the road, and crashed into a light pole then a barrier, coming to a stop. He tried to reverse away from the barrier but was stopped by a motorist.

He was taken to Lakes District Hospital where he underwent a blood-alcohol test, producing a result of 158mg, more than three times the legal limit.

Appearing before Judge Bernadette Farnan in the Queenstown District Court yesterday, Felix admitted dangerous driving and drink-driving. He was convicted and sentenced to 150 hours’ community work, and disqualified from driving for nine months.

■Addison Thepsila (33), self-employed, of Arrowtown, assault with intent to injure, January 30, in Arrowtown, nine months’ supervision to enable intervention for alcohol and violence issues, ordered to pay $5000 reparation to the victim for emotional harm.
