Holiday road toll climbs to 7

The Labour Weekend holiday road toll has risen to seven after two people died in a crash near Whangārei.

Emergency services were called to the two-car crash on State Highway 14 near Wheki Valley at about 9.40am this morning.

Two people were killed and three others received moderate to critical injuries.

The road remained closed on Sunday afternoon and people were asked avoid the area and expect delays.

On Saturday night a person died after falling from a moving vehicle in Kawakawa Bay, south-east of Auckland.

The incident happened just before 7pm on Clevedon-Kawakawa Road. Police are investigating.

On Saturday morning, two people died in a two-car crash near Waihola in South Otago.

On Friday night a motorcyclist was killed in Canterbury after  colliding with a car. Earlier in the day in Hawke's Bay, a woman died after being hit by a truck.

The holiday period began at 4pm on Friday and ends at 6pm on Tuesday.
