Three killed in two accidents

Three people were killed in two separate motor vehicle incidents in the South yesterday afternoon.

Two people died and two others were injured in a serious crash south of Mataura.

A police spokeswoman said emergency services were called about 5pm and State Highway 1 was closed after a vehicle rolled.

She said it was not yet clear what caused the incident, but only one vehicle was involved.

Traffic was diverted through Brydone Rd and the Glencoe Highway, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

A St John spokeswoman said two of the occupants died at the scene.

A third occupant of the vehicle had serious injuries and was flown to Dunedin Hospital, and the fourth occupant was taken to Southland Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries.

The Serious Crash Unit is now investigating.

Emergency services also attended an incident near Waimate yesterday, where a tractor rolled on private property, killing the driver.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called at 5.15pm.

The incident happened on a farm near Timaru Rd, between Deep Creek Rd and Champions Rd.

WorkSafe had been advised and the death had been referred to the coroner, he said.
