It has been a cold, wet and windy start to the school holidays for much of the country.

MetService is warning of heavy rain for the northwest Nelson Ranges.

Meanwhile a heavy rain watch is in force for Southland, Westland, the ranges of eastern Nelson and northern Marlborough, eastern Bay of Plenty, Auckland, and Northland south of Whangārei, and now includes eastern parts of Dunedin and Clutha about and south of the Otago Peninsula.

A strong wind watch is in force for Northland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne, also southern Westland and northern Fiordland.

Auckland experienced heavy rain and strong winds last night and MetService say along with rain, it's possible there will be a rumble or two of thunder today.
