Heathcote Valley School pupil Matilda Scofield has proven she is a budding writer with her bilingual poem Sumner Pohutukawa.

Matilda, who is in year 6, won the writing prize in the New Zealand Top Outdoor Spot Competition.

She wrote the poem in her out of school class, but her $300 voucher prize toward a field trip to a nearby outdoor trail will be shared with her school.

The annual competition is run by the Walking Access Commission, and entries were received from all over New Zealand.

Pupils entered their favourite spot in the form of a photo, drawing, poem or short story to win a prize pack.

The photo competition was won by Breens Intermediate year 7 pupil Taylor Blackbourn, and Waimairi School year 6 pupil Lauren Hickmott won the art prize.
