A Christchurch high school defended their South Island junior girls volleyball title on Thursday.

Canterbury champs Burnside High School took down Cashmere High School 25-22, 25-9 in the final at Pioneer Stadium, Christchurch.

Both teams had to overcame an early loss in crossover pool play to make the final.

Burnside High suffered a loss to Christchurch Girls' High School, while Cashmere High went down to Richmond's Waimea College.

Waimea got the better of CGHS in the bronze medal match, winning 25-12, 25-17.

St Andrew's College finished eighth, while St Margaret's College came in 13th.

Cashmere High were also the top Christchurch school in the boys' competition, finishing fifth.

Shirley Boys' High School finished eighth - one place higher than Riccarton High School.

Middleton Grange School finished 13th and Burnside High were 14th.

The boys' competition was won by Nelson College, which beat Dunedin's King's High School in the final 25-17, 25-11.
