Canterbury suffered their second 50-over Ford Trophy defeat to Wellington in the space of four days after falling to a 22 run loss in the capital on Saturday.

Canterbury were set 276 to win and looked on track early at 118/1 in the 23rd over. However, after the dismissal of Black Caps opener Henry Nicholls for 55, Canterbury struggled for any partnerships of substance and were dismissed for 253 in the final over.

With two rounds of the Ford Trophy remaining Canterbury are in second. They have a chance to confirm a semi-final spot when they host Otago at Hagley Oval on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, at club level the fourth round of the men's two-day premiership began.

The final two round-robin matches in the premier women's Kirsty Bond Series were also completed. Old Boys Collegians, St Albans, Sydenham and Lancaster Park will now contest the semi-finals and final at St Albans Park on February 22.

Football

Any chance Canterbury United Dragons had of sneaking into a play-off position in the ISPS Handa Premiership appear to be over after they conceded two goals in the final 15min during their 1-2 loss to Waitakere City at English Park.

Captain Tom Schwarz was making his 150th appearance for Canterbury. But he did not mark the milestone in the manner he would have wanted. He picked up a second yellow card and was sent off shortly after half-time.

However, the Dragons responded well to the setback, making light of their numerical disadvantage to take the lead soon after through Jacob Richards.

However, the match was then turned on its head in an 8min spell, as Waitakere skipper Sam Burfoot found an equaliser before New Zealand under-23 international Dane Schnell popped up to provide a winner in the 85th-minute.

The Dragons are rooted to the bottom of the competition on nine points from 12 matches.
