The Canterbury boxing team won 10 gold medals at the national amateur championships at the Hornby Workingman’s Club.

The four-day event, which finished on Saturday, saw Canterbury win team of the tournament for their effort in the ring.

No victory was more spectacular than that of Sam Watt who won his fifth consecutive New Zealand title in the 91kg-plus category.

The win also earned him the ABA Trophy for the best super heavyweight at the tournament.

Rendz Renaneses also defended his under-56kg national title, while Ryan Entese won the Arty Beban Memorial Trophy for best fly weight at the tournament after his victory in the 52kg elite class

The trio were three of five elite boxers to strike gold, with Tegan Burdett-Clark beating New Zealand representative and long-time rival Amy Andrew, of Manawatu, in the final of the 57kg elite category.

Burdett-Clark’s husband Sam took silver in the 64kg elite lightweight class.

Another impressive winner was Daniel Meehan. The Christchurch Boys’ High School student won a national title in the junior 60kg class after beating Navahn Gilmore of Thames.

Trevor Swainson earned plenty of admirers in spite of coming up short against two-time defending Commonwealth Games champion David Niyika in the elite 91kg category.

The Canterbury team didn’t just win inside the ropes either.

Event organiser and Canterbury team manager Holly Sullivan was awarded the Brian O’Brian Memorial Trophy for services to boxing. She said it was a humbling way to cap-off a busy few weeks of preparation for all involved.

“The award is something pretty special for everyone who works hard at the association,” she said.

“You never look for that kind of recognition,” she said. “I’m more about getting my boxers prepared the best so they can perform well.”
