A team of Canterbury-based Fijian players have taken out the Rolleston Rugby League Nines tournament on their first attempt.

The annual preseason event was won by Canterbury Bati at Foster Park on Saturday.

The team, which were competing at the tournament for the first time, beat the Burnham Chevaliers in the final 24-0.

Canterbury Bati are made up of Fijian players from across the Canterbury community.

Teams from Halswell, Sydenham, Ashburton and Riccarton also took part in the tournament, which was held for the fourth time.

The one-day event was created off the back of the success of the Crosbie Nines tournament in Riccarton, which will be held on February 22.
