Selwyn para-swimmer Celyn Edwards left his mark on the world championships at the London Aquatic Centre.
Celyn Edwards earned two top eight international rankings in the World Para-Swimming Championships at the London Aquatic Centre.

The 18-year-old, who trains with the Selwyn Swim Club and was New Zealand’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony, swam a personal best to finish sixth in the final of the men’s 100m S8 backstroke with a time of 1min 12.94sec.

He backed that up with eighth in the 100m S9 butterfly final in a time of 1min 09.03sec.

The championships finished on Monday. Edwards, who lost an arm in a car accident when he was five, was disqualified in the 200m individual medley heat due to a technicality on his transition to breaststroke when he was on pace to be ranked ninth in the world.

While he missed out on the final of the 100m breaststroke, his time in the heat of 1min 23.50sec saw him ranked 14th in the world.

Edwards said on social media he is keen to return home and build on the results he has earned.
