A lot has changed over the 40 years that the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Dunedin has been providing free, confidential and independent advice to anyone who is in need.

The bureau began in 1967 as the Emergency Advice Service which operated 24-7.

By 1978 the service expanded from just a telephone into an office which the public could call for information, and in 1979 was invited by the Consumers’ Association to learn how to handle consumer complaints.

As some community members may remember, CAB Dunedin was first located on Bath St, moved to High St, Moray Pl and the First Church office building to finally residing at Rodgers House, 155 Princes St today.

When JP Rachel Hurd first started volunteering in 2002, she and the other volunteers would "answer inquiries by consulting booklets and pamphlets put out by different organisations and government agencies."

Bureau chairwoman Robin Davison, said today most inquiries were met through the bureau’s online database, Cabnet.

Robin favours Cabnet as an "IT programme to meet the needs of management, governance, and training needs of volunteers and staff."
