Festival of ‘joy’, ‘belonging’

Thousands are expected to enjoy colour, community spirit and powerful performances as the Moana Nui Festival returns to the Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday, March 28.

The event organised by Pacific Trust Otago will include cultural showcases, Pacific food, village stalls and plenty for all the family to enjoy.

Pacific Trust Otago chief executive Nimo Elisara-To’o said Moana Nui was more than a festival — it was a space where identity was strengthened, cultures were proudly shared and generations stood side by side.

"When our elders, parents, and young people gather in one place, there is joy, there is learning and there is belonging.

"It reminds us that wellbeing grows from connection — to our culture, to each other, and to the wider Otago community."

This year’s theme, "Weaving the Generations Together", drew on the Niuean proverb:

"Koe pulotu feaki he tau tupuna ke monuina hololoa e tau atuhau." —

"When elders are wise, the generations that follow will prosper."

The proverb reflected how deeply cultures value intergenerational connection and the strength that comes from learning alongside elders, honouring the knowledge they carry while creating space for young people to flourish.
