Guy Fawkes night, November 5, will bring the familiar bangs, whistles, and shrieks of fireworks.
While dazzling for many, these explosive displays can be deeply distressing for the 4.4 million pets who do not understand what is going on.
Michelle Le Long, chief operating officer of pet insurance company PD Insurance, said, in a statement, fireworks season always brought a spike in problems.
“From stress-induced injuries to escape attempts, it’s a vital reminder of the importance of keeping our furry family members safe and calm during noisy celebrations."
Healthy Pets New Zealand trustee and veterinarian Dr Cath Watson said the risks were not just about stress, but the potentially devastating physical consequences.
"I’ve seen dogs hit by cars while fleeing in panic, and horses badly tangled in fences.
"These incidents can tragically result in death or euthanasia.’’
Plan ahead for Guy Fawkes with these simple steps:
1. If you plan on having fireworks, let your neighbours know, so they take steps to protect pets.
2. Create a safe pet space inside that is dark, enclosed, and filled with comforting things. Cover outdoor aviaries with a tarpaulin.
3. Help your pet relax with distractions, treats or calming sprays/wraps.
4. Try to stay calm, even though it is distressing to see your pet upset and scared.
5. There's always a risk your animal may bolt, so ensure they are microchipped, tagged with your contact details and take photos.
6. Playing calming music is another effective way to reduce anxiety.
