`Ayes' win stadium vote

An "umbrella resolution" yesterday to go ahead with the Forsyth Barr Stadium sparked what must be the shortest debate on the controversial issue so far.

There were no questions and no discussion when the Dunedin City Council, at a full meeting yesterday, voted on a recommendation to proceed with the stadium.

The council was required to vote on the issue, as one of the conditions in a contract with the University of Otago to buy land at the site for its buildings was the council, as the vendor, proceed with the project.

While the council has passed many separate resolutions, each relating to a particular aspect of the approval process of the stadium, there had not been an "umbrella" resolution to proceed with the stadium as a whole.

A motion to that end was carried by an aye or nay vote, with only Cr Dave Cull heard to vote against.
