As the official opening of Dunedin’s new Kmart store nears, the Dunedin City Council is proposing a change to parking restrictions in the area.

A council spokesman said parking in the Andersons Bay Rd and McBride St area was free without time limits at present.

But the council was proposing to introduce some unpaid parking-time restrictions on parts of the block of Andersons Bay Rd, between the Macandrew Rd/Midland St intersection, and Hillside Rd/Orari St intersection.

Changes were also proposed in McBride St, between Andersons Bay Rd and Braemar St.

"We are proposing to change the restriction of approximately 35 carparks from unrestricted to 60-minutes unpaid.

"These changes are designed to help support businesses by increasing the parking turnover in the area.

"Parking will remain free of charge."

Mitre 10 Mega store owner Martin Dippie is also investigating building a two-storey car-parking building within the existing parking lot of his Andersons Bay Rd retail store, as the South Dunedin shopping precinct continues to grow.

He said feasibility work was under way, but a decision was yet to be made on whether to go ahead with the project, which would add 84 carparks to the site.

Land-use consent was granted last month, and it aimed to ease parking pressure in the area during busy periods.

Dunedin residents are encouraged to provide feedback about the proposed DCC parking changes, by midnight on May 22.
