The Dunedin City Royals have got the monkey off their back.

They got their first win of the Southern League season with a 4-0 victory over newcomers University of Canterbury at Tahuna Park last weekend.

The Royals get a chance to make it two in a row in another winnable game at home against FC Twenty11 tomorrow.

The Royals have been pushed up to seventh place in the 10-team competition, while FC Twenty11 remain on the bottom, and winless, after five rounds.

In the ODT men’s southern premiership, Mosgiel and Northern remain the only unbeaten sides.

Mosgiel are back home this week against fourth-placed University. Both teams had solid wins last week, Mosgiel beating Roslyn-Wakari 4-1 and University getting up 4-2 over Queenstown.

The boot of Rhys Quarrell has been influential for Mosgiel and he leads the golden boot race with six goals.

Northern are also home to Roslyn tomorrow, as are Queenstown, with the Royals making the trip to the resort.

Green Island make the trip south to Invercargill to face Queens Park, who sit third in the standings, and Wanaka make a big trek to Timaru to face Northern Hearts, who are yet to notch up a win.

In the women’s South Island qualifying league, the Royals remain the only unbeaten team after squeaking home against Roslyn last week.

They face Northern — who have yet to win a game — tomorrow, while Roslyn are at home to University.

Queens Park will host Green Island in Invercargill.

All games this weekend will be vital for momentum ahead of the Kate Sheppard and Chatham Cups, which get under way next weekend.
