Win propels pair into qualifiers

Indoor bowls

Timaru couple David and Mary Mealings won the mixed pairs for the Goodman Cup on Sunday.

They will now represent South Canterbury at the Eastern Zone qualifiers to be held in Oamaru over the July 5-7.

They contested the final against Derek and Carolyn Cooper.

In an even contest after six ends, the scores were locked up at five points each.

The Mealings combination added four points over the next three ends to lead by four going into the last end.

On the last end Derek Cooper, playing his last bowl, tried to remove the Mealings’ shot bowl and move the jack to the right to hold either four shots for the draw or five to win, but he only managed to remove the jack from the mat to make the final score a rather flattering 12 shots to the Mealings.

In the semis the Coopers were always in control against Roydon Wood and Catherine Hickey.

They jumped out to an eight-shot lead after three ends, and held on to win 14 shots to four with an end to play at which stage Wood conceded the game.

In the other semifinal the Mealings staged a remarkable fight back.

Trailing by six shots with two ends to play against Neville and Ruth Gould, the Mealings managed a four and a two to force an extra end.

Gould one down with the last bowl fell short with his last bowl, to make the final score the Mealings 11, Gould 10.

Results. Quarterfinals: Mealings 12, Jenelle Lockyer and Lex Gibson 8; Gould 10, Ray Christensen and Evelyn Duffield 8.

Semifinals: Mealings 11, Gould 10 (on extra end), Cooper 14, Wood 4.

Open pairs

On Saturday an open pairs was held instead of triples that were scheduled.

A good afternoon’s bowls ensued with Alan Sullivan and Jim Lowther prevailing by 0.5 end (19 ends, 37 points) after a countback from Dave Stewart and Selwyn Prattley (18.5 ends 38 points).

A further 0.5 of an end behind were third-placed Lyn Brown and John Dawson (18 ends 32 points).

These were the teams with three wins from their four games.

A highlight was having the newly appointed association patron Lloyd Prattley playing.

*In Pleasant Point after an absence of some years, the Totara Valley club is up and running and playing bowls in the Pleasant Point Bowling pavilion.

Bowls are being played on Monday nights and Thursday afternoons, largely due to the efforts of the Goulds.

Kia Toa player pulls big upset in singles

Outdoor bowls

Kia Toa’s Paul Brohan pulled off a big upset by winning the Peter and Joy Leonard Cup.

Brohan knocked out the big guns in post-section play to win the South Canterbury Development singles trophy played at the Kia Toa Bowling Club.

Brohan showed he will be a bowler to beat in the future.

This is only the second year the event has been run and a huge entry of 26 developing players were out striving to win the Leonard Trophy.

Last year’s winner and South Canterbury singles player from the West End club, Nigel Mobberley, was outclassed in the first game and had no answer to Dan Johnston.

On his way to the final, Brohan beat South Canterbury’s best, sending Gareth Burgess and Mike Crook packing their bags in the semifinals with some outstanding bowls.

On the other side of the draw, Barker played his best, beating Jason Browning, Dan Johnston and first-year bowler Brodie Devine in the semifinal with ease.

For the final of Barker versus Brohan, many would have had money on Barker, who has had a lot more experience.

It was a cracker, with each bowler playing to their best.

Brohan had the upper hand in the early stages of the game taking the lead 8 to 5 but Barker fought back on the next end to score maximum, with outstanding draw shots to hit the lead 9 to 8.

Brohan then produced some outstanding lawn bowls over the next three ends to take the lead 13 to 9.

Barker levelled the scores, scoring on the next two ends to make the score 13-all.

Brohan then raced away with the game in style 21 to 15.

We must acknowledge first-year bowlers Anthony Holland and Brodie Devine.

Last 16: J Barker 21, J Browning 11; D Johnson 21, N Mobberley 12.

Last 8: P Brohan 21, G Burgess 16; M Crook 21, C Guthrie 8; B Devine 21, A Bell 14; J Barker 21, D Johnston 6.

Semi Final: J Barker 21, B Devine 11; P Brohan 21, M Crook 15.

Final: P Brohan 21, J Barker 16.
