A Christchurch street has reopened following a gas leak.

Emergency services were called to the incident at 2.20pm on Monday after reports that a gas main had been hit.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area between Bealey Ave and Salisbury St. 

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Darryl Ball said no evacuations were required. 

A police spokeswoman later confirmed the street had been reopened later in the afternoon.
