A youth has been charged after leading police on an early morning pursuit over the Port Hills.

A police spokeswoman said officers signalled to the youth to pull over about 2.40am on Thursday due to the manner in which the vehicle was being driven.

However, officers had to abandon the chase a short time later.

The vehicle was later found at the intersection of Evans Pass and Summit Rds where it had been abandoned.

The youth was located nearby and arrested.

The person has been charged with failing to stop, driving while disqualified, driving in a dangerous manner, along with other charges, the police spokeswoman said.

They are due to appear in Youth Court next week.
