A spate of suspicious vehicle fires broke out across Christchurch during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Just after 2am, a crew from the Woolston Fire Station was called to a 20m by 5m scrub fire at Kennaway Reserve, which was likely caused by a burnt out vehicle.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Ian Littlejohn said a high-pressure delivery hose had to be used to extinguish the blaze.

He said it was deemed suspicious due to the burnt out vehicle found near the scene.

Then at 4.55am crews from the Redwood and Brooklands fire stations responded to a call about a vehicle "totally involved in fire" on Lower Styx Rd.

Mr Littlejohn said initially the vehicle was believed to be next to a hedge. However, he said no vegetation was affected by the blaze.

Firefighters had to use breathing apparatus while fighting the blaze.

At 5.14am fire crews received multiple calls about a blaze near the Hampshire St shops in Aranui.

Mr Littlejohn said another vehicle was found to be on fire at the rear of the shops.

Fire crews from the Anzac and Christchurch city fire stations were called to the scene.

All three incidents have been referred to police.
