Waimak United Football Club is facing a fundraising mountain to get its Under 15 Academy boys team to Australia for a major tournament.

The team is heading to the Gold Coast in September for the Premier Invitational Football Tournament and has been fundraising for the trip.

A bumper garage sale at the McAlpines North Canterbury Pipe Band Hall in Ashley St, Rangiora, last Saturday provided their coffers with a significant boost towards the $40,000 they need to get 18 players, two coaches and two parents, including the team manager Louise McKinlay, to the tournament.

McKinlay said it was an "amazing result".

"Thanks to the immense behind-the-scenes work of our fundraising committee, made up of parents of our players, and all the hard work on the day, we raised over $5500.

"We also want to give a massive shout out to the businesses and organisations who also helped make it a success by donating product, time or services."

It is the first time a Waimak United Football Club team has been invited to compete at the tournament from September 25 to October 4.

"We believe this is an awesome opportunity and experience for our lads to travel there and compete, so we set about making it happen, and thanks to the support of our sponsors Canterbury Scaffolding and Veridian, we are on track to succeed."

The fundraising effort will continue with a quiz night on Sunday, June 14, at the Five Stags bar and restaurant in Rangiora.

The club will also hold a "Got Your Back" fundraiser, where supporters pay to have their name on the back of a player's shirt. Spaces are still available and more information can be found at the club's Facebook page.
