The Christchurch SPCA is holding an 'adoption day' today.

The SPCA centre in Hornby is currently at capacity for both cats and dogs, and adoption days provide an opportunity for families to meet a potential furry companion.

Centre manager Natasha Sutton said they are incredibly busy caring for animals who are waiting for their forever homes.

"We’d really love more people to come and see our beautiful animals up for adoption. Every single one is unique with their own special personality."

Sutton said there are 43 cats up for adoption out of 155, which are currently out in foster care.

"Our lovely tabby Marcie is the centre’s longest standing resident so far, and has been here 166 days,  followed by Briar and Bronx.

"Marcie is a little shy, but once she gets to know you, she’s a little purr machine.

"Briar loves her toys and her blanket to suckle on and Bronx is also a little shy, but once he trusts you, you’ll be friends for life.”

Sutton says the centre currently also has 70 dogs in care - 21 of which are puppies that were dumped by the Waimakariri River last month.

It is the largest dumping of puppies the centre has seen in a decade. Nicknamed the Potter Pups - due to being named after Harry Potter characters - they will be up for adoption in about a month.

"I don’t think we’ve ever had 70 dogs in care before, it’s a huge amount.

"Eleven of these lovely canines are currently available for adoption,” Sutton says.

"The dogs won’t be available to view on the adoption day as the focus is on cats and small animals, but we welcome any enquires on our dogs up for adoption.

"We truly believe there is a special pet out there for everyone, so we do encourage people to come and look at our amazing animals and give them a life they truly deserve."
