A fire has badly damaged a Christchurch house, with three fire crews battling for an hour and a half to put it out.

The fire happened about 6.15am on Brittan St, Linwood on Tuesday morning.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Darryl Ball said the fire started in the roof space.

No one was in the house at the time.
