Lighting festival to illuminate Christchurch again this winter

Tīrama Mai will light up Ōtautahi-Christchurch again this winter with a range of installations and artworks across the central city.

The free lighting festival will be held from Friday, June 24, to Sunday, July 3.

Christchurch City Council events and arts manager Lucy Blackmore said the event will build on the success of the inaugural 2021 festival.

"This year we have all new, never-seen-before lighting installations, illuminated artworks and immersive experiences," Blackmore said.

"The country’s best lighting artists and creative minds have been working hard to create these pieces in partnership with mana whenua."

Tīrama Mai's opening night coincides with New Zealand’s first Matariki public holiday.

"The celebration of Matariki is woven throughout Tīrama Mai," said Blackmore.

In the lead-up the event, a series of panels will be set up in the central city to tell the story of Matariki.

"One of the showstopper pieces is a 21m long illuminated tunnel that runs between Cathedral Square and Te Pae," Blackmore said.

"Visitors moving through the tunnel will be treated to a dazzling light display accompanied by a recording telling a Ngāi Tahu creation story.

“It’s a truly immersive experience that explores a unique part of our culture."

Other displays will be set up around Cathedral Square, Te Pae, the Arts Centre, New Regent St, Little High and Riverside Market.

"While enjoying the lights and excitement of Tīrama Mai, visitors can also take the opportunity to explore the city and grab a bite to eat at one of the city’s many hospitality venues," said Blackmore.
