At least one person has been critically injured after a serious crash which has closed part of State Highway 7 in the Hurunui district this afternoon.
Police were called to the single-vehicle crash on Culverden Rd, between Long Plantation Rd and School Rd, about noon on Thursday.
"Initial indicators are that there are critical injuries," a police spokesperson said in a statement.
"The Serious Crash Unit has been advised, and the road is expected to remain blocked for some time while emergency services work at the scene.
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible and expect delays."
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said at 12.45pm SH7 is closed about 37km north of the Waipara township.
"Closure points are in place at School Rd and Long Plantation Rd," NZTA said.
"Follow directions given by emergency services on-site and be prepared to detour. Allow additional time for travel through the area this afternoon.
"Due to the nature of this incident, police serious crash investigations will be required. The road is likely to remain closed for several hours."
