The demolition of the first of the old Otago Polytechnic
School of Art buildings on Anzac Ave has begun.
It will be replaced with a $1 million engineering technology
teaching space, expected to be completed in time for the
start of the 2011 academic year.
Over the next 12 years, the polytechnic plans to replace most
of the buildings on the art school site with a series of
classrooms, workshops, student study and social areas and a
barn for horticultural studies classes.
The area beside the Water of Leith will be developed into a
park.
The redevelopment, which will eventually house an estimated
1000 students, is expected to cost at least $25 million.
