Learning centre may close

Otago Polytechnic's Community Learning Centre in South Dunedin could be closed, with the loss of two full-time equivalent positions.

Otago Polytechnic communications and customer relations general manager Mike Waddell emphasised no decision had been made about the computing centre, but the polytechnic was consulting interested parties and had proposed its closure.

At present "anything" was possible, including partnering with another community organisation.

Funding for community training had tightened in recent years, and fees for some courses were introduced this year.

The centre had not met student number targets this year, and it was possible that as people became more computer-savvy, demands for computer courses had dropped.

The polytechnic was keen to provide community computing in Dunedin, however.

Mr Waddell was not sure how many staff members were affected, although the positions equated to two full-time jobs.

Consultation would close on November 24, with a decision by chief executive Phil Ker at the end of the month.

The centre is on the corner of Hillside Rd and King Edward St.
