Focus on art city models

The Dunedin arts community will meet today to discuss designing a canvas for the city's creative future.

The symposium will look at international arts cities, such as Copenhagen and Barcelona, as models which Dunedin should be seeking to emulate.

The forum would feature input from a broad cross-section of artistic disciplines and communities, Otago Polytechnic School of Art head Prof Leoni Schmidt said yesterday.

"We don't see ourselves as representative. There are so many different art forms in Dunedin. There's visual art, community art, dance art, theatre art, art education, art and health ... The arts are so embedded in so many ways in the Dunedin community.

"We hope all these people will come to the symposium, so we can talk about how to work together and have a voice in the arts and culture future of this community," Prof Schmidt said.

"We want to look at city models which have successfully embraced the arts - places like Copenhagen and Barcelona and Sydney."

The symposium, from 10am-4pm today at the Dunedin School of Art, has been organised by the Dunedin City Council arts and culture working group Transforming Dunedin, which was established last year under the council's "Your City, Our Future" consultation process.
