University of Otago law students Nic Blumsky-Gibbs and Sean Conway have gained third place in an international client consultation contest in the Netherlands.

University teams from Jamaica and Australia finished first and second, respectively, in the event earlier this month.

Good team work and plenty of interviewing practice with their coach Selene Mize at the Otago Law Faculty had been keys to success in the world final of the Brown-Mosten International Client Consultation Competition, the two students said.

The Otago pair last year gained the right to represent New Zealand after topping a national contest.

The students, who went in to the contest's final round with a perfect score, were supported by the New Zealand Law Foundation, law firm Russell McVeagh and the Otago faculty.

Mr Blumsky-Gibbs was "really pleased" at how well he and his team-mate had performed in the demanding finals.

Two-person teams had 35 minutes to interview and advise an actor - playing the role of a client - on options for legal action. Team members then had 10 minutes to confer on steps required to advance the client's interests, while a high-powered judging panel observed.

Mr Conway said that working well under pressure had contributed to the Otago success.

This is the latest of many successes for Otago law students competing in international competitions, including victories in the international client interviewing competition in 1997, and in an International Negotiation Competition.
