Students launch collection

Two surveying students with a can-do attitude are aiming to boost flagging foodbank stocks, with a collection taking place this weekend in North Dunedin.

Third-year student flatmates Michael Mitchell and Trent Davis are prepared to collect unwanted non-perishable food items and cans from flats in the student quarter this weekend.

The flatmates have also set up a "drop-off" point at 83 Clyde St for students to deliver any unwanted goods.

Mr Mitchell said the donated items would be given to the Otago Combined Foodbanks to distribute to welfare-minded groups around Dunedin.

The pair have done most of the organising through social media networking and were hopeful students would support the charity-minded drive.

University exams finish for students today and unwanted food items were often wasted and thrown out when residents packed up and moved away for the summer break, Mr Mitchell said.
