A new cycling and skateboarding policy is being drafted by the University of Otago for its Dunedin campus.

The policy will include clearer guidelines for skateboard use, allegedly in response to complaints about skateboarders using pedestrian through-routes.

Consultation on the proposed policy is still taking place.

"In the interests of consistency and clarity, the university would prefer to wait until further work has been done on these proposals before discussing them publicly," a university spokesman said.

Otago Polytechnic does not have a dedicated skateboard policy. Polytechnic health and safety adviser Terry Buckingham said most skateboarders were dissuaded by the cobblestoned campus, which was riddled with steps.

Because so few people used skateboards around the polytechnic, guidelines were not required, Mr Buckingham said.

"I am aware that it's becoming an issue for streets around town, but we really don't have a lot of areas that are particularly attractive for skateboarders."
