School of Phys Ed drops programmes

The University of Otago has scrapped three non-degree programmes from its School of Physical Education as part of a wider push to phase out sub-degree diplomas and certificates.

The decision, which had been in the pipeline since last year, was given final approval at the university's council meeting yesterday. It means the certificate in sports studies, the certificate in fitness management and the diploma of sports studies will all be taught for the last time next year.

Three 200-level papers will not be taught from next year.

School of Physical Education dean Prof Doug Booth said phasing out sub-degree programmes was prompted by a change in government policy.

Only 16 people were enrolled in the programmes last year and dropping them would not result in any staff losses, he said.
