More than a dozen University of Otago students have combined a spot of gardening and a picnic at a shared campus garden as part of part of Environment Week activities.

The garden was established last year by Students for Environmental Action, an Otago University Students Association club, near the Anzac Ave-Albany St intersection.

During this week's event, which was organised by Campus Greens, another student club, participating students weeded a herb garden, prepared a garden plot and planted seedlings in the shared garden, which provides herbs and vegetables for students.

Among those taking part were twin sisters and first year students Hannah Payne-Harker and Nyssa Payne-Harker (both 18).

Hannah said it was good to get close to nature during a break from classes and Nyssa said it was "really great" to see students working together in the garden.

Association environmental sustainability officer Josh Pemberton said the week had been going well and was raising awareness of environmental issues.
