Alexandra-born violinist Jenny Banks has won a prestigious seat in one of the oldest and largest civic orchestras in the world.

After an extensive process of auditioning, she was named principal second violin of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, Germany.

Miss Banks was unable to be contacted yesterday, but University of Otago Music Department senior lecturer Peter Adams believed she was the first New Zealander to play in the orchestra.

''As far as we know, Jenny is the first New Zealander to play in this orchestra, let alone lead a string section.''

Miss Banks' mother Judy, who lives in Earnscleugh, said she was delighted with her daughter's achievement.

''It's absolutely wonderful - amazing,'' Mrs Banks said.

''She's thrilled to bits and we're thrilled to bits.''
