A team of three Dunedin students is preparing to travel across Europe using only energy drinks as currency.

The trio, representing the University of Otago, is the only New Zealand team chosen to take part in the ''Red Bull Can You Make It?'' competition, which pits 100 teams from 27 countries against each other in a race across Europe.

During the seven-day journey, starting on April 4 from London, Paris, Milan and Vienna, competitors will not be allowed to use cash or credit cards, and instead must trade cans of drink for transportation, lodging, food and other necessities in order to reach the finish line in Berlin.

Tish McNicol said the trio, dubbed Team Freeman Hunters, could not believe their luck after entering the competition only last week, a day before the cut-off date.

When, five days later, they found out their short video entry had been chosen, their ''excitement was through the roof'', Ms McNicol said.

Chessie Henry said part of their strategy was to make team uniforms and utilise as much ''classic'' Kiwi charm as possible.

The team will upload photos and videos of the journey.
