Police say they are disappointed a party in Hyde St, Dunedin, on Saturday night was not better organised.
Hundreds of people attended the party, which was organised at short notice on Facebook, Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of Dunedin, said.
He said police made only one arrest, a 24-year-old Gore plumber who was charged with disorderly behaviour.
There were several small rubbish fires in the student area on Saturday night and yesterday morning, but none was in Hyde St.
Snr Sgt Scott said the police's main concern about the event was its potential to create problems, given the street's notoriety as the home of the annual Hyde St keg party, which in recent years has been organised in co-ordination with the University of Otago, the city council and emergency services.
This party's planners had been somewhat ''naive'' in creating a situation that was potentially ''fraught with danger'' by posting an open invitation to a party, he said.
''Anyone organising an event needs to have a bit more forward planning involved.
''It would have been good if they had thought about the consequences of several thousand people accepting an invitation and emergency services not being prepared to deal with what could possibly have happened there.''
