Five Otago scholarship winners Asia bound

Five University of Otago students will head to Asia next year after being awarded Prime Minister's Scholarships for Asia.

Recipient Jesse Aimer will continue his study in law and geography at the National University of Singapore, focusing on sustainable development, while the other recipients will study Chinese language courses at universities in China and Hong Kong.

Education New Zealand general manager international Peter Bull said the experience of living and studying in a different culture would stay with them for the rest of their lives.

''While in Asia, the students will establish enduring relationships and networks that will help them to succeed in the global economy and bring benefits to New Zealand,'' Mr Bull said.

The scholarships cover overseas study, research or internships ranging from six weeks to two years at top Asian institutions.

A total of 160 New Zealand students were awarded the scholarships last week to further their studies at institutions in some of New Zealand's key markets.

''As well as the individual benefits, scholarship recipients act as ambassadors for New Zealand and showcase the quality of our education system wherever they go in Asia.''

The Otago recipients are Jesse Aimer, Briar Topp, Imogen Walker, Bridget Malcolm and Cameron Tonkin.

Applications are open for the next round of scholarships and close on March 30, 2015.
