Otago Uni Dental School among world's best

Otago University's Dental School has been recognised as being among the top 10 in the world.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject have been released and Otago University was the only New Zealand university to have a subject feature in the top 10 with its dentistry subject ranking 8th in the world.

QS uses the opinion of over 85,000 academics, who identified the leading institutions within their field and region of expertise and more than 41,000 employers, who identified the universities that have produced outstanding graduates in a given discipline area. More than 17 million research papers and 100 million citations were included in the analysis behind the results.

All New Zealand universities make the global top 400 in at least one discipline.

The best result was achieved by Otago University for Dentistry, followed by Massey University which ranked 15th in the world for Veterinary Science and The University of Auckland, which ranked 23rd in Development Studies.

University of Otago Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said she was delighted that the School of Dentistry's international reputation for excellence has been formally recognised through the QS rankings.

"I would like to pay tribute to the school's staff for their commitment to providing high quality undergraduate and postgraduate education while also undertaking internationally leading research," Professor Hayne said.

Professor Hayne said the school had been identified as a top performer and the university made a strategic decision to invest in a major re-development of its facilities with work scheduled to begin in November.

The University of Auckland ranked top nationally in 31 disciplines.
