The University of Otago has appointed Dunedin police officer Dave Scott as its new proctor, replacing Dave Miller, who resigned after only four months in the job.

Mr Miller resigned in March to take a job in the justice sector.

Senior Sergeant Scott is at present the Dunedin area response manager.

He manages the day-to-day running of all front-line policing activities in Dunedin, and is second in charge of the Dunedin armed offenders squad.

Vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne said she was pleased someone with Snr Sgt Scott's experience would fill the role.

"Dave Scott is extremely well-placed to take on this key role, the prime objective of which is to enhance our campus lifestyle, provide pastoral care to our students, and build on our highly-valued town/gown relationship by ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all.''

Snr Sgt Scott was the police forward commander at the annual Hyde St party from 2012-16, and had established relationships with the Otago University Students Association, Campus Watch and Campus Constable John Woodhouse.

His new role as proctor would include monitoring student behaviour and safety on and off campus.

He will also supervise five Campus Watch leaders who have an additional staff of 40 people.

Snr Sgt Scott will begin his new job at the end of May.
