Dunedin's mayoral candidates have been challenged to tell a
train-load of commuters their stance on public transport.
The Taieri Gorge train is to run as a commuter service from
Waitati, via Port Chalmers, to Dunedin on September 22.
The Get The Train group, which booked the train, wants the
candidates to meet the train and spend 1 minute giving
travellers "the gist" of their position on public transport,
spokesman Ross Johnston said.
Get The Train wanted to promote rail as an option for Otago
transport, and believed oil prices would make a daily train
service between the city and Waitati viable within one or two
decades, he said.
The outward train departs Dunedin at 6.40am and arrives at
Waitati at 7.20am.
It leaves Waitati at 7.40am to arrive in Dunedin at 8.40am.
The return train leaves Dunedin at 5.45pm, and arrives in
Waitati at 6.30pm.
The train leaves for Dunedin at 7.30pm, arriving at 8.10pm.
