A scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream, involving pupils from Logan Park High School, provided a lively start to a regional Shakespeare festival in Dunedin this week.

Other scenes followed from Columba College (Hamlet), Logan Park High School (Julius Caesar and Richard III), Columba College (The Merchant of Venice) and John McGlashan College (Othello).

The opening of the Otago regional event in the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand's (SGCNZ) festival at Otago Boys' High School on Tuesday night coincided with three anniversaries.

This year is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death on April 23, 1616, and also the 25th anniversary of the SGCNZ, which stages the festival. It is also the 10th anniversary of University of Otago's involvement as the main festival sponsor.

Wendy Adam, who co-ordinates the university's involvement with the festival, said this was ‘‘a particularly special year'' because of the three anniversaries.

The Otago regional event was growing, and this year involved participants from 11 Dunedin and Otago schools and 30 performances spread over three consecutive nights.

This was up from two nights last year. Nationally, the festival attracted about 5500 school-pupil participants in 23 centres.
