CD Reviews: Liam Finn

Liam Finn's third full-length release may have more than a flourish of the whimsical psychedelic strains to which the songwriter has long been drawn, but its skewed soundscapes and loose jam-band vibe also confirm his musical wanderings often occur in the dead of night.

In this case, the dead of night in New York, where Finn collaborated with brother Elroy, EJ Barnes and Jol Mulholland.

Experimental inclinations aside, there is an obvious pop pedigree to The Nihilist, providing it with a warm core that glows brightest in string-driven opener Ocean Emmanuelle and the high harmonies of Helena Bonham Carter.

  • Liam Finn. The Nihilist. Liberation.
  • 4 stars out of 5.
